Happy Birthday!

This Sunday, November 16th, is Fr. John Kiley’s Birthday. On Friday at noon, the faculty acknowledged Father with birthday cake and a gift certificate. Hopefully every school family will also acknowledge the occasion by sending along birthday best wishes.

I assure you that you will rarely find a pastor of a parish school whose active commitment to his school measures up to Father Kiley. All that he does quietly behind the scenes for St. Francis of Assisi School , would impress you. We are very blessed.

Happy Birthday, Father!

 Ice Cream Social

The sixth and seventh grade classes were treated to ice cream sundaes on Thursday afternoon. Both grades achieved the goal of 50% family attendance at our recent Starlight Auction.

 OPEN HOUSE – Wednesday, November 19th from 3:00 – 6:30 p.m.

Don’t forget to remind your family, friends and neighbors to drop by.

Reaching Out to Our Military Overseas

Our school was petitioned to send supplies and letters of support to our soldiers in harm’s way. Over a unit of over 900 servicemen and women, currently positioned in the mountains of Afghanistan , are continually under enemy fire. Their dangerous position makes it difficult for them to receive supplies. They are in extreme need of personal care items such as toiletries. The troops especially need to receive letters of encouragement from United States citizens at home.

To this end, I have asked our older students to write three letters that stress our concern for our soldier’s safety, our appreciation, our admiration and our prayer. I encourage parents and friends to do the same.

Furthermore, as a Thanksgiving outreach sacrifice, would you be willing to send  personal care products for men and women to the school for these soldiers. The school will see that the letters and donations are delivered to our contact. We hope that letters and donations can be shipped in time for arrival in Afghanistan by Christmas.

Thanks for your support.

 Help!

Mr. Pare is looking for farm animals for the Live Nativity on December 20.  If you know anyone with sheep, goats and/or a donkey, please call the school.

 Budding Actor/Model

McKai Holston lives the life of an average third grader during school hours, but after hours he is scooting off to play rehearsal for the RI Community Players’ November production of Gypsie. This is the boy’s first acting role. In the wings, are upcoming rehearsals for the film, Mall Cop, in which McKai has been cast as an extra.

For years, McKai has been hard at work in his blossoming career. His work began as a child model before he first entered school. After several photo takes, a Los Angeles agent took McKai under her wing. Since then, commercial modeling offers have been coming his way. McKai has modeled for Houghton Mifflin text book division, Brown Publishing, Wondertime Magazine, Rosie O’Donnell’s Child Crafts Book, and Little Kids Catalogue and Website. In addition this photogenic youngster has appeared in commercials for Little Kids and Cox Communications.

What does McKai do in downtime? He enjoys playing basketball for the St. Francis of Assisi School team & for the Boys’ and Girls’ Club and practicing the trumpet and the piano. How does McKai feel about seeing himself in ads? He says,” It’s fun and exciting.”

Lynn Ryan Memorial Scholarship

This year’s recipients of the Lynn Ryan Scholarships are Samantha Antone (Grade 8), Victoria Dubois (Grade 7) and Emily McCarthy (Grade 7).  Congratulations for all of your hard work and diligence to studies and Christian values!

History of Halloween

The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England . During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.

The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as "going a-souling" was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money.

The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

The St. Francis of Assisi Women’s group is starting a Prayer Shawl Ministry.  A prayer shawl is a hand knitted or crocheted shawl, symbolizing the caring and spiritual support of the faith community.  Shawls are given to parishioners who are elderly, ill or undergoing treatments such as kidney dialysis or chemotherapy.  And as with all acts of generosity, the prayer shawl ministry enriches the giver as well as the recipient.  Please come on Thursday November 6, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the school library.  For those experienced in needle work, patterns will be available.  Below are the supply requirements.  Two of our members are prepared to teach beginners; one in knitting and the other in crochet.  All are welcome.  Over the winter months we will work on the shawls on our own time and at our own pace. The shawls will be blessed at a parish Mass during Lent and then distributed to those in need.  Extra materials and supplies will be available on November 6th.  However, if you wish to bring your own supplies this is what you will need:

Knitting: Needles – size 11 or 13  -555 yards of yarn – worsted weight

Crochet: Hook size “M” or “N” 740 yards of yarn – worsted weight

Not handy with a needle?  Come on November 6th anyway.

Have a cup of coffee, and we will find a way you can help!

LYNN RYAN was a second grader at St. Francis School when she was accidentally run over by a school bus on her way home from school.   But God brings light out of darkness.  As a result of Lynn ’s tragic death, the State of Rhode Island has enacted strict child safety rules which have made transportation to and from all area schools much more secure and protected.  In memory of the passing of this young girl, Mrs. Kathy Ryan, her mother, has promoted an annual collection through which two deserving students in our parish school are awarded scholarship money toward their tuition.  This collection will be taken up at all Masses next weekend.  Thank you for your generosity toward this commendable cause.

First Friday Mass on October 3 (12:05 pm) will be the “Dedication of the Bell ” for Sr. Charles Joseph Carr.  In addition to Sister’s teaching duties she kept the school on schedule by ringing “her” bell so that the students entered the school on time, had morning recess, adjourned for lunch and dismissed promptly. The bell was chimed exactly 9 times, no more, no less.  When Sister allowed someone to ring the bell in her absence she was clear as to the number of rings.  As a lasting memorial to Sr. Charles, who dedicated more than half her life to the students of St. Francis of Assisi School the school has retired the bell and will mount it in a place of honor.

Some students just hate to leave school.

Hailey Wejlard, grade 5, who regularly attends St. Francis School ’s Extended Day Program commented, “I actually get mad at my mom when she comes early.  I get to see Kyra (Fournier) after school, and we do our homework together.”  Adam Brissette, grade 3, and McKai Holston also like the quiet atmosphere where they can tackle some of their homework.  It gives them time at home to play.  Devin Hunsberger is happy that Extended Day gives him additional time to play with some of his classmates on the playground equipment.  Of course, the fundamental purpose of the Extended Day Program is to provide students with a schedule of activities after school in a safe familiar environment until their parents arrive from work.  EDP runs from 7:30 am – 8:30 am and 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm on all full school days.
